GAME is winning back market share from supermarkets

High Street retailer GAME has clawed back some of the UK’s video game market share from supermarkets.

That’s according to Kanter Worldpanel, which found that for the 12 weeks ending July 6th GAME boosted its share of the physical games, movie and music market by 1.1 per cent year-on-year.

Amazon retains its market leadership position, however, with a market share of 21.8 per cent – up three per cent year-on-year. Between them GAME and Amazon claim a 52 per cent share of the UK physical games market.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have all seen their share erode year-on-year, with almost one million fewer shoppers buying entertainment products from them throughout the period.

“High street and online retailer, GAME, has performed particularly well thanks to Gen 4 games, especially the industry’s highest value release, Watchdogs, taking over a quarter of all sales to date,” strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel added.
