Games Media Awards return on October 15th: new categories, new voting, new venue

A top award voted for by consumers is just one of the key changes to this year’s Games Media Awards.

The Games Media Awards, now in their eighth year, return on October 15th and take place at the revamped Bloomsbury Ballroom.

All the award categories have been overhauled, plus this year the winners will be chosen by panels of expert judges invited to meet up and debate the nominees’ achievements before a private vote. The judges will be named and thanked on the day of the GMAs.

The emphasis is not on brands, but on individual writers and their work across the year and/or singular pieces of writing (depending on the category).

Categories this year include prizes split out by discipline (news, in-depth features and critiques), platform (video, audio, written word), plus an important nod for newcomers. The full list of awards can be found below.

The consumer-voted prize – Gamer’s Choice – will ask members of the public to choose their favourite piece of games writing of the last 12 months from a shortlist picked by our judges.

A ‘Journalists’ Journalist’ prize will ask media attendees of the Games Media Awards ceremony to vote on the night for their choice of top journalist.

Entry for consideration is now open, and this year we are encouraging writers and editors to send their suggestions in direct – although we will read all lobbying, we want this to come straight from you too.

The deadline for all entries is August 12th.

Sponsors for year’s Games Media Awards include Playfire (award partner for the Gamer’s Choice prize) and Gamescom.
