The developer of the next Gears of War has not ruled out a release for the game on PC.
Speaking to Game Informer, studio head at The Coalition Rod Fergusson replied with a possibly” when asked if Gears of War 4 could ever come to PC.
The news comes at a time where there is huge sensitivity about Microsoft’s increased willingness to blur the boundaries between its Xbox and PC platforms.
Earlier this month it was revealed that Xbox boss Phil Spencer had argued that Microsoft’s priority was to bring its titles to as wide an audience as possible by decoupling our software platform from the hardware platform”. This is to be done under the banner of its Universal Windows Platform standard – which in itself has proved controversial – that runs across Xbox and Windows 10.
However, Spencer quickly played down talk of a perceived softening of Microsoft’s support for Xbox One, and also backtracked on comments that appeared to suggest the Xbox could become an upgradable platform like the PC.
Nonetheless, an increasing number of Xbox exclusives are making their way to PC. The recent confirmation that Quantum Break was no longer an Xbox One exclusive caused a huge reaction, although subsequent to that Forza 6 also joined the ranks of titles making the jump.
Gears of War 4 would be another huge signal of Microsoft’s changing priorities should it arrive on PC. Only a PC release for Halo 5 would be bigger news among the fanbase.
Gears of War: Ultimate was recently released for Windows 10 via the Windows Store.
