Grand Theft Auto V retakes UK charts top spot

Rockstar’s latest has once again become the UK’s biggest-selling game, despite sales more than halving last week.

According to the latest Ukie Games Charts, compiled by GfK Chart-Track,Grand Theft Auto V saw unit sales drop 51 per cent in the second week of 2015 – but managed to climb above Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which similarly saw sales drop by more than half, plummeting 61 per cent.

The feat marks GTA V’s fifth Number One, and ends Advanced Warfare’s sixth week on top; the shooter finished the week in second place.

In a week bereft of new releases, EA’s annual football release FIFA 15 followed the trend set by GTA and Call of Duty, seeing sales fall 51 per cent.

The title held onto its third place spot, failing to extend on its eight week run at Number One.

One of the only titles to have launched so far in 2015, Nintendo’s Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, suffered heavily in its second week, diving from its debut position of 16 to cling onto the Top 40 in 40th place.

In a relatively slow week for the UK games industry, Ubisoft’s 2013 Assassin’s Creed instalment, Black Flag, managed to outdo the across-the-board slump.

The historical stealth-action sequel rose from number 27 in the charts to sit just outside of the Top Ten at 11.

This is largely thanks to a spike in sales of the Assassin’s Creed Unity Xbox One hardware bundle, which additionally includes the Kinect camera and this year’s Assassin’s Creed follow-up – Assassin’s Creed Unity – in addition to a copy of Black Flag.

Here’s the Top Ten for the week ending January 10th:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
  2. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Activision)
  3. FIFA 15 (EA)
  4. Far Cry 4 (Ubisoft)
  5. The Crew (Ubisoft)
  6. Assassin’s Creed Unity (Ubisoft)
  7. Minecraft: PlayStation Edition (Sony)
  8. Minecraft: Xbox Edition (Microsoft)
  9. Destiny (Activision)
  10. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (Warner Bros)
