Indie dev claims iOS word games top spot in UK and US with Word Forward

A new word puzzle game made by lone Irish dev Shane McCafferty is currently topping the word game charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Word Forward, which is free-to-play and published by AppyNation, was released last Thursday as is currently ranked No.1 in its category in both the UK and US, as well as in ten other countries.

As of yesterday (March 17th) users had played over 700,000 games in the single player mode as well as thousands” in multiplayer.

McCafferty, now based in Canada, has previously worked on hits such as Jetpack Journey and also been involved in projects for consumer games sites like Eurogamer, VG247 and Videogamer.

What I want is to keep doing what I love and have loved since childhood – making games. My expectations are just that. Keep a roof over our heads and get to make the next game. Simples,” he told MCV.

There’ll be an update to Word Forward soon to address some minor launch issues. The usual post-launch tidy. Beyond that we’ll see how the game continues to do.

McCafferty is currently working on an upcoming baseball title in conjunction with US baseball player Dirk Hayhurst.
