Kojima foresees end of consoles

Legendary games developer and the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series Hideo Kojima has said that in time the games industry will move away from consoles and turn instead to cloud-like computing technology.

In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” Kojima told attendees at a Tokyo-based MGS event, according to Reuters.

Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel – wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”

Adding a bit of drama to proceedings, the comments were made on a stage shared with Sony Computer Entertainment Japan’s president Hiroshi Kawano. His reaction?

It’s a bold prediction. We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge.”

The comments echo those made by Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada who said late last year that in ten years’ time a lot of what we call ‘console games’ won’t exist”.
