Mario Kart 8 gets UK release date

The biggest game on the Wii U release calendar has a UK release date.

The game will launch on May 30th, and will let players control Bowser’s minions for the first time.

Mario Kart 8 does not particularly use the Wii U GamePad to any particular degree, but it remains one of the most important titles for Nintendo’s struggling platforms. Its home console predecessor –Mario Kart Wii – remains one of Nintendo’s most successful ever video games.

The game was announced during Nintendo’s Direct broadcast, which also detailed a new character for Super Smash Bros on Wii and 3DS (Little Mac of Punch-Out!! fame), alongside new trailers for Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

The company also revealed a new trailer for an upcoming new RPG from Monolith Software.

What’s more, Nintendo showed off some new Wii U eShop titles. These included NES Remix 2 (Our April 25th) and Super Luigi Bros – which is Super Mario Bros, played from right to left and starring Luigi. The company revealed that Ubisoft RPG Child of Light will launch May 1st.

Finally, the company announced that a number of GBA games will be coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 are the first three games. Nintendo already offered these titles (along with seven other GBA games) to 3DS owners who had bought the console before the platform holder lowered the price.

Nintendo said it had no plans to re-release GBA games on 3DS and has so far not deviated from that. These games are currently only scheduled for Wii U.
