Mexico demands Call of Juarez ban

Authorities in Mexico have asked federal authorities to ban Ubisoft’s upcoming shooter Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

The publisher announced earlier this month that for the third instalment in the series the game will abandon its traditional Wild West setting in favour of a contemporary them.

However, state regulators for the town of Ciudad Juarez, where the game is based, have objected to its release. The Washington Post says that around 6,000 people died in drug related violence in the city in 2009 and 2010 making it one of the most deadly in the world.

"It is true there is a serious crime situation, which we are not trying to hide," Chihuahua state congressman Ricardo Boone Salmon stated.

"But we also should not expose children to this kind of scenarios so that they are going to grow up with this kind of image and lack of values."

State congress leader Enrique Serrano added: "Children wind up being easily involved in criminal acts over time, because among other things, during their childhood not enough care has been taken about what they see on television and playing video games. They believe so much blood and death is normal."
