Miyamoto working on new IP for Wii U

It’s a complaint often levelled at Nintendo, but now even the father of Mario is calling for a brand new franchise.

Development legend Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed in an interview with Famitsu (via Polygon) that he is indeed working on a new IP – once he’s finished with Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8, of course.

Talking about the recent system update, which reportedly makes Wii U run more efficiently, he said: "These sorts of updates mean nothing if we don’t put out games for [Wii U], and I hope people look forward to the games coming up.

"We’ll have Mario Kart 8 out next spring, and at that point we’ll have the whole line-up in place, so I think it’s about time we brought out a new franchise.

"I can’t give out details, but that’s the title that’s been keeping me pretty busy lately."

It will be interesting to see what Miyamoto has come up with this time. The new IPs he has created over the last decade range from the tricky and strategic Pikmin to the mainstream casual hit Wii Fit.
