Modding reinstated for COD: Black Ops

Developer Treyarch has reinstated the practice of modding in the Call of Duty series via a planned post-launch update for the PC version of Black Ops.

Speaking on the Black Ops web forum a Treyarch spokesperson confirmed: We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch."

When Modern Warfare 2 studio Infinity Ward removed the capability for modding in the PC Modern Warfare series, the studio sighted the preventing of cheating as its reason. The company also canned deciated multiplayer server support, to much fan disappointment.

"We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game," added the source.

"There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game. And, dev console: confirmed."

Treyarch has already confirmed the return of server support for multiplayer.

A November 9th release is slated for Call of Duty: Black Ops.
