Namco Bandai nets Star Trek publishing deal

The publishing rights for the video game tie-in of next year’s Star Trek movie have been acquired by Namco Bandai.

Licensed movie titles are not the given they once were and have to some extent fallen out of favour. However, Namco clearly feels there is an opportunity to capitalise on the expected popularity of the upcoming JJ Abrams flick.

The game will follow its own narrative path penned by God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk. It will focus on co-op gameplay with players assuming the role of either James T Kirk or Spock.

"Working with Paramount Pictures and Digital Extremes reinforces Namco Bandai Games’ commitment of expanding its portfolio to include triple-A western developed games in addition to its popular and well-respected Japanese franchises," Namco’s Carlson Choi stated.

"Digital Extremes’ attention to detail, and the collaboration with Paramount Pictures and the team at Bad Robot Interactive will create an authenticity that is sure to thrill Star Trek fans and gamers alike."

The next Star Trek film is due out in May 2013.
