Next Hearthstone expansion likely called ‘Whispers of the Old Gods’

A New York advert has seemingly revealed the name of the next Hearthstone expansion.

As spotted by a Reddit user, an in-progress mural painting in Brooklyn carries the name ‘Whispers of the Gods’. Blizzard has already said that it will detail the next big step for the game tomorrow (March 11th), so the timing certainly fits.

As detailed by PC Gamer, this is also a name that online sleuths have dug up as a possibility. And Blizzard’s teaser event invite uses the phrase There are whispers around the Tavern…”. So it seems pretty nailed on.

The arrival of Whispers of the Gods should also usher in the most radical change in the history of Hearthstone.

The game is being split into two tiers. Standard will only allow players to use hero’s default cards and expansion cards released in the last calendar year. This rules out a large number of cards that have become staple features of the most dominant decks. Standard will become the new tournament format for the game, too.

Alongside Standard players will also have Wild mode. This is a more of a free-for-all where all cards are allowed. Players can ladder using either discipline.
