Now GAME drops The Last Story entirely

GAME stores are confirming that they will not be stocking the standard edition of Nintendo’s Wii title The Last Story tomorrow.

Furthermore, the game has been removed from both the GAME and Gamestation websites and customers who had pre-orders in place have been notified of their cancellation.

Yesterday the retailer confirmed that it wouldn’t be stocking the Limited Edition version of the title. Customers who had pre-ordered the game were told that they would be sent a standard copy instead – a move that will now clearly not happen.

Before the prophets of doom chime in, however, it’s important to note a bit of perspective. In an environment where GAME is having to be selective with its spending, the omission of a Wii-exclusive RPG is perhaps not the most bewildering news.

That’s not to say that the issues currently faced by GAME aren’t stark.

Earlier this week GAME's marketing director Anna-Marie Mason categorically stated that the chain "will honour pre-orders for games that are currently on sale".

In addition, it was unable to stock any of Ubisoft’s PlayStation Vita launch titles, and the week before it was not carrying new release Tekken 3DS – which was published by Nintendo in the UK.

The severity of the situation varies from publisher to publisher, but at the very least it’s clear to see that relations with at least two major publishers are strained.

What message do you have to gamers who are afraid of pre-ordering with GAME because they're worried they may be cancelled at the last minute because you can't stock them?

Anna-Marie Mason: Well, we know our customers really well. Most of them have a really long history with us, and they know as a business we are absolutely committed to giving the best possible range as much of the time as we possibly can.

The instances we've had in the last couple of weeks are absolutely the exception, not the rule.

Can you guarantee pre-orders for games that you are currently selling?

Anna-Marie Mason: Absolutely.

Yet more bad press for Game though - the "we can't stock everything" line is all well and good when it applies to something like this, but entire publishers catalogues for a new console is pretty disasterous! You can also add in the fact that last time i wanted a new release ON release day (MGS HD collection) Game had none in stock in my local shop meanwhile my local Indie had it as well as my local supermarkets! It's pretty bleak for Game if they're essentially letting customers down now at the last possible moment (they will have known about this move for a few days atleast) - that's about as bad a situation as it gets.
