NPD: Wii Sports Resort dominates

Despite the 26 per cent year-on-year drop suffered by video games software sales at North American retail in July, Nintendo’s dominance continues with the platform holder (and Nintendo exclusive titles) accounting for seven of the month’s top ten best sellers, according to NPD.

Newly released Wii Sports Resort was the single best selling SKU, shifting 508,200 titles throughout the month. Close behind it, however, was EA’s NCAA Football 10, with the Xbox 360 version claiming second (376,500 sales) and the PS3 SKU third (237,400).

In fact, EA was the only publisher to interrupt Nintendo’s control of the listings. The Xbox 360 version of Fight Night Round 4 (116,400) claimed eighth spot whilst Wii outing EA Sports Active (98,800) was tenth.

It’s all Nintendo aside from that, with Wii Fit (164,300) claiming fourth, Mario Kart Wii (156,600) finishing in fifth, Mario Kart DS (132,200) in sixth , Pokemon Platinum (116,400) seventh and New Super Mario Bros (101,800) ninth.

NCAA Football 10 was the top selling game for the month, with combined sales of 689,000 units across all platforms,” NPD’s Anita Frazier explained.

Wii Sports Resort was the top-selling software SKU for the month with 508,000 units sold with a 2.5 per cent attach rate to the hardware install base.

Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year.”
