Peter Molyneux's £50,000 DLC

Oh Peter. Outspoken creative experimenter Peter Molyneux has confirmed that his next game will contain DLC… that costs £50,000.

His first project post-Lionhead is Curiosity. It’s a virtual room that contains a single black cube. Players can then tap away at the cube with a chisel, causing fractures. Fractures caused by other players can also be seen.

Something can be found in the middle, but ONLY the player who makes the decisive fracture will be able to claim the prize.

So far, so Peter. But here’s the real kick.

Players will be able to buy stronger chisels as DLC. An iron chisel costs 59p and offers ten times the clout of the default tool. There’s also a diamond chisel. That’s 100,000 times more powerful. But there’s only one… and it costs £50,000.

"It's an insane amount of money," Molyneux told New Scientist. "This is not a money-making exercise; it is a test about the psychology of monetisation."

The point of the ‘experiment’, Molyneux claims, is to “record and study how news of what's inside spreads across social media in an attempt to explore the psychology of social media users. We will rely entirely on social media. How will [the person who claims the prize] prove it? That in itself becomes a fascinating aspect of this experiment."

This data will be used in the development of Peter’s next title, which won’t be out for around two years.

Curiosity is due out soon on PC and mobiles.

Molyneux turned his back both on his former studio Lionhead and then employers Microsoft in May.
