Pokemon Go is already the biggest mobile game in US history, report says

After less then a week of availability, Pokemon Go has made it right to the very top of the all-time US mobile market.

SurveyMonkey reckons that the game had attracted just under 21m daily active users. That overtakes the previous record holder, Candy Crush Saga, with an estimated 20m.

Within three days it had more users than Twitter. It is forecasted to overtake Snapchat and Google Maps shortly, providing the explosive launch growth can be sustained. It would also then overtake Google Maps as the largest user of Alphabet’s digital mapping data.

However, the site does carry a word of warning.

Despite what Nintendo’s share price might suggest, it’s too early to declare Pokmon Go a win for the business. Nintendo have a minority stake in Pokmon Go, and will pocket just a small slice of the game’s profits,” it added.

History hasn’t always been kind to games that generate tremendous hype. Back in 2012, Draw Something consumed the public consciousness for a few weeks before its user numbers dropped like a stone. Nintendo’s last mobile game, Miitomo, met a similar fate, finding early success that was ultimately unsustainable.

Pokmon GO is already an unbelievably huge game, and if it can retain its legions of new users and convert them into highly engaged and paying players, then it could be a huge financial success. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.”
