PS4 and PC title Dead Star is shutting down

Competitive online shooter Dead Star is switching off, despite being offered for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers in April.

Kotaku reports that Armature Studios is closing the game’s online servers on November 1st, and has already pulled the game’s store listing on both Steam and PSN.

It was released last December as a kind of Early Access title on PS4, with those who pre-ordered the title gaining access to an early playable build. A Steam launch followed in April, but neither this nor the PS+ promotion were enough to create a long-term player base.

We are shutting down the game because, bluntly, the costs of operating the game now exceed its income,” Armature’s director of operations Jack Mathews said. This decision was not taken lightly internally, and was extremely sad to me personally.

Armature put a lot of time, love and studio resources into both the game and the community, and we are extremely grateful to our community for their support in keeping this going as long as it could. This is purely a financial decision to ensure the best possible future for Armature Studio.”

Armature was founded by former Retro Studios developers that had previously worked on the Metroid Prime series. It has worked on a number of successful titles including The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Injustice: Gods Among Us, The Unfinished Swan, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and, most recently, Microsoft’s ReCore.

It is also working on crowdfunded title Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
