QLD developers face challenge of creating new IP

Mark Fludder from the Information Industries Bureau continues his discussion with MCV Pacific on the current state of Queensland development.

On Monday, Fludder discussed the re-structuring the development community has undergone since it was rocked by several closures over the last few years. Today, he continues to talk about the challenges the sector faces moving forwards.

Fludder comments: "The major hurdle facing the industry is the move from work-for-hire on noted franchises to the creation of original IP and self-publishing. This is a major shift in the design process and one that is a lot harder than often credited."

"How studios adjust to designing original projects and turning their ideas into marketable games, choosing the correct platform and innovatively marketing their brand, as well as the games, will most likely be the key performance criteria for QLD studios going forward."

He believes that marketing and brand building are amongst skills potentially lacking in the QLD development scene.

Fludder continues: "Local studios are used to external producers and QA being provided by publishers. These are now some of the key skills they require."
