Samsung Galaxy S4 revealed, dated for next month

The handset that could potentially deliver a savage blow to Apple’s smartphone aspirations has been unveiled by Samsung.

The Galaxy S4 is an impressive beast, with specs that put iPhone 5 to shame and are likely to force Apple away from its typical incremental upgrade strategy and towards the unveiling of a brand new, completely redesigned iPhone in the summer.

The S4 is smaller and lighter than its predecessor and boasts a 441ppi 1080p full-HD five-inch screen embedded in a polycarbonate chassis, with metallic banding around the edge.

Amazingly the unit houses an eight-core 1.6GHz CPU and 2GB of RAM (twice that found in the iPhone 5). It will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavours and support 4G LTE network connectivity. A 13MP camera is mounted on the rear and a 2MP on the front.

It will be shipped with Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 overlaid with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Key features include eye-tracking that pauses action when you look away and enables tilt scrolling when you’re looking directly at the handset. Air Gestures allow some operations to be performed without actually touching the screen.

The Galaxy S4 will be released in 155 countries on April 26th and will be carried by EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone. The phone will sell SIM-free for around 480.
