2014 will see home consoles venture into the virtual reality space for the first time, a new report claims.

Eurogamer says that Sony has plans to expand the PS4 feature-set into the VR sector in 2014 with the launch of an Oculus-Rift type headset device.

It adds that internal testing has centred around Evolution Studios’ DriveClub, with users able to look around the cockpit of their cars by simply moving their heads. Evolution, of course, led Sony’s stereoscopic 3D efforts.

Eurogamer even claims that Sony was at one stage preparing a Gamescom reveal for the VR device, although those plans were then scrapped.

CVG adds that Sony will now reveal the device at the Tokyo Game Show later this month, claiming that the planned Gamescom reveal “fell through at the eleventh hour”.

The jury is still out on the public appetite for VR headset gaming, of course. 3D screens fell foul of being the want of content creators as opposed to the public. Will we be saying the same about VR in a couple of year’s time?
