The Rock is starring in a Rampage film

Midway’s 1986 arcade hit Rampage is the latest video game license to be given the Hollywood treatment.

Deadline reports that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will begin filming for the live-action film next summer after completing duties on Fast & Furious.

Rampage is being made by New Line, with Beau Flynn producing. A director has apparently not yet been assigned. Like the game, the movie will see giant monsters (likely a gorilla, wolf and lizard) lay siege to cities, which in this instance will be American.

In the more immediate future, video games will again hit the silver screen this summer when Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage star in Pixels.

Looking further ahead other video games heading to cinemas include Assassin’s Creed, Warcraft, Hitman, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and Angry Birds.

These of course join a long, long list of games IP to have been adapted for screens including the likes of Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Prince of Persia, Final Fantasy, Doom, Mortal Kombat, Super Mario and Silent Hill.
