There will be a Dead Island film

Global entertainment giant Lionsgate and acquired the rights to make a feature film based on recent Deep Silver hit Dead Island.

The studio has said that the game’s hit trailer (which for a time was a very hot topic on MCVuk.com) is serving as its primary creative inspiration” for the movie.

The award-winning original trailer received over a million online hits in the first 24 hours after its release and reached 10m hits in 48 hours.

Where the film and the game differ, however, is that Lionsgate has promised to stay true to the trailer by using human emotion as its centre point.

Tombstone and The Mummy producer Sean Daniel has already committed to the project along with Stefan Sonnenfield, Jason Brown, Missy Papegeorge and Sarah Perlman. Lionsgate production and development president Alli Shearmur is overseeing the project.

Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck,” Lionsgate co-COO and motion picture group president Joe Drake stated.

This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.”

Global Dead Island sales recently passed 2m copies.
