Torrent site BTJunkie voluntarily closes doors

Bit-torrent sharing site BTJunkie has made the decision to cease operations after seven years of activity.

The site itself did not host content on its servers – which was very much the domain of the recently closed Megaupload – it has taken the precautionary step in light of increasing pressure on online piracy.

"This is the end of the line my friends," a message on the site says. "The decision has not come easy, but we’ve decided to voluntarily shut down.

"We’ve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it’s time to move on. It’s been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best."

BTJunkie was not thought to have been a known target of authorities in the process of pursuing copyright-infringing sites, although it had been previously flagged by content holders and blocked from appearing in Google search results.
