UK CHARTS: MW3 is No.1; Biggest UK week ever; Falls short of Black Ops

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has assumed its pre-determined position at the top of the UKIE GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 40.

It helped the UK games sector to its biggest weekly return ever, making £120.8m, beating previous record holder Week 45 in 2010.

MW3 revenue for the first five days is up 1.5 per cent on Call of Duty: Black Ops, though the unit sales are actually 1.6 per cent lower than its predecessor. *

Saying that, the game still claims the title of the highest grossing opening week of all time for any entertainment title, beating the combined opening weekend box office sales of the last four Harry Potter films combined.

Add the opening week revenues of Black Ops and that represents a bigger return that all eight Harry Potter films combined.

Xbox 360 again emerges as the lead format, claiming 59 per cent of sales – that’s up on the 55 per cent it saw with Black Ops.

Outside of Call of Duty fever, Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim debuts in second place, delivering the publisher’s biggest ever opening week ahead of Fallout: New Vegas and becoming the fifth biggest launch of the year.

Mind Candy’s new DS title Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo also debuts in the Top Ten.

Here’s the full UK Top 20 for the week ending November 12th:
