Users are also allowed to hack or alter the system and use it how they see fit.

Valve has detailed its plans to launch a Steam-based living room console.

In fact, the firm will release multiple devices from multiple manufacturers, with the first 300 devices being sent out this year to users as part of a Beta. You can find out how to join the Beta here.

The ‘Steam Machines’ will use the new Linux-based SteamOS system the company unveiled on Monday.

A third piece of news is due on Friday.

Steam Machines are effectively PCs designed for use with a TV in the living room, and according to Valve there will be a variety of different types of boxes for users of all shapes and sizes.

No specifications for any of the machines were announced or what it would look like.

The specific machine we’re testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware,” reads the announcement.

Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors.”

Steam is encouraging those 300 Beta testers to go public with their thoughts on the machine, and say they will announce a number of control mechanisms that are better suited to the living room. Although keyboard and mouse are supported.
