Xbox 360 iPlayer back on?

It seems that the possibility remains that BBC’s live TV and catch-up service iPlayer could yet make the move to Xbox Live.

Speaking to Eurogamer, UK Xbox boss Stephen McGill stated: There are conversations going on.”

McGill went on to reiterate the points raised by European boss Neil Thompson in June – that being the company’s desire to make its offering different form the current iPlayer variants available on other systems.

The thing for us is, how do we add some magic sauce to that so that it’s different?” he asked. A lot of people are watching that on their PC. How many people are going to watch it on the console unless we add something different?

That’s one of the things we talked about when Sky came out – how we could make it more intuitive, the social side of things, party mode environments. We put those together with Sky and launched our service. So you should talk to the BBC.”

In 2009 it was speculated that Live’s membership fees were the major stumbling block in negotiations, with the BBC reportedly uncomfortable with the idea of iPlayer being restricted to just the premium, paid-for arm of Microsoft’s service.

iPlayer console integration has proven a big success on both the PS3 and Wii.
