Xbox 360 sales hit 39m

As part of its many announcements at America’s technology showcase CES, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer has confirmed that Xbox 360 has now sold 39m units worldwide since its arrival in 2005.

With no up-to-date global numbers for wither PS3 or the Wii it’s impossible to precisely know how this compares to its rivals, though Wii sales currently stand at around double that, with PS3 behind – though not by much.

The platform holder also confirmed that over 2.2m people played games over Xbox Live between Christmas and New Year, with one new user appearing every second.

In addition, over 50 per cent of Live users have now tried out some of Xbox 360’s social features, which include the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Last.FM, Sky and Netflix.
