Xbox drives Microsoft EDD to record sales

A successful Christmas for Xbox 360 hardware and software saw Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division post record sales of $4.24bn for the Christmas quarter.

That’s a 15 per cent year-on-year increase over 2010. The division registered a profit of $530m, which represents an annual decline of 28 per cent.

8.2m Xbox 360 consoles were shipped throughout the period. That’s a decent leap from the 6.3m shipped last year. Not bad for a six year old machine. Xbox revenue in isloation grew nine per cent to $322m.

Total Xbox 360 sales now stand at 66m and Kinect unit sales at 18m. Xbox Live now has over 40m registered users, up 33 per cent year-on-year.

Total EDD revenue, which as well as Xbox also includes Windows Phone and Skype, accounted for around 20 per cent of Microsoft’s overall revenue for the period.
