Xbox One, PS4 launches spike digital sales in November

The digital games market exceeded $1bn in total sales last month, according to research collected by SuperData.

The [a]list daily reports on SuperData’s findings, which show a 25 per cent increase in digital sales in November compared to the same period in 2012.

The research firm notes that the freshly launched PS4 and Xbox One consoles likely had a major hand in driving total downloadable purchases just from tapping into their respective consumer bases.

"Several big franchises released on the same day as the next gen consoles,” SuperData stated. In particular Call of Duty: Ghosts, which generally launches two months later, was now immediately available via digital download on Xbox Marketplace and PSN.”

Similarly, Need for Speed Rivals and the late-October release of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 drove overall sales. We expect this trend to continue for the remainder of the year," the company said.”

DLC sales specifically saw a 41 per cent increase across PC and consoles, bringing in $325m for the month. The free-to-play MMO category dropped by 17 per cent, while digital segments such as mobile and social saw very minor year-over-year growth.
