Exclusivity deal with EA has come to an end

CSR Racing 2 is the first non-EA mobile game to feature a Porsche

Mobile racing hit CSR Racing 2 will be the first non-EA mobile game to use the Porsche license, following the conclusion of EA’s exclusivity deal with the sports car manufacturer.

NaturalMotion general manager Julian Widdows announced the partnership at Pocket Gamer Connects London this week, where he also showed a video on stage of a Porsche rendered in the games engine.

This is the first time an officially licensed Porsche has appeared in a non-EA game since 2000, although some enterprising developers have side-stepped the exclusivity deal by featuring RUF-customised models, which aren’t included in the exclusivity deal.

EA have had an exclusivity deal with Porsche since 2000, with the deal coming to its conclusion in 2016. At the time, Porsche said "the current situation is no longer desirable for both sides.".

Porsche has had a long history in video games, with its Porsche Boxster being the subject of the PlayStation 1 title Porsche Challenge, developed by SCEE. Most recently in the mobile space, Porsche popped up in Real Racing 3, with the Cayman GT4 showing up ahead of its real-world release in February 2015.
