Documents hint at redesigned, slimmer PS3

Documents filed by the US regulatory body FCC (Federal Communications Commission) suggest that a super slim PS3 console is on the horizon.

Spotted by Japanese website Pocket News, the documents talk about the PS3 4000 series. The current PS3 3000 series was released in 2009 and is a slimmer version of the 2006 launch PS3.

The document mentions the model number as CECH-4001x, where x will be replaced to denote the unit’s hard drive capacity. While there’s no mention of a smaller form factor, diagrams accompanying the document show a difference in where the FCC label will located in the 4000 series as compared to the current 3000 series, suggesting that the new PS3 will sport a new design.

Citing sources, Eurogamer reports that the new super slim PS3 will be announced at Gamescom next month. The earlier slim model was also announced at the German trade event. While there is no confirmation of this, MCV UK has learned that Sony has something big planned for Gamescom.

MCV India will be talking to PlayStation India country manager Atindriya Bose very soon, and we’ll be sure to get you details on a possible super slim PS3. Stay tuned.
