HARDWARE

Despite 2008’s difficult market environment, the PSP managed to display a positive year-over-year growth of 17.2 percent (to 3.543m units) and pushed its cumulative sales in Japan to over 10 million units (11.078m as of December 28, 2008).

The Nintendo DS hardware, which has been acting as the main powerhouse behind Japan’s gaming market over recent years, moved 4,030,000 units during 2008 (DS + DS Lite + DSi), lifting its domestic installed base to over 25 million units. Although both DS hardware and software markets fell short of the previous year’s figures, the Nintendo DSi showed some strong sales performance in late 2008. Launched in November, the latest DS iteration sold 1,280,000 units within only two month of availability.

SOFTWARE

In software news, all of the three major systems (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360) significantly grew in software sales. The Wii platform had two titles whose yearly sales for calendar 2008 crossed the two million-copy milestone – Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii. Of these two, Wii Fit has been playing a key role in attracting people who had had little or no previous contact with gaming machines, by embodying the concept of health and fitness. As for PS3 software, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots shifted 686,000 copies, a sales number that stands as the highest in the platform’s history.

The PSP software market also fared well throughout the year, with the most remarkable example being Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. Selling 2,452,000 copies, the platform’s first double-million seller became the headliner of 2008’s yearly software sales chart.

The DS platform retained its leading position during 2008, with arrays of hit titles occupying higher positions, including the over two million selling Pokemon Platinum.

THE YEAR AHEAD

Looking ahead to 2009, a string of star titles are lined up to hit the market, including DS’s Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito. With the factors in mind that the DSi has been holding its strong pace and that the PSP recorded its best-ever results in 2008, Japan’s handheld market should have a good chance of maintaining stable growth in 2009. There are also big console titles scheduled for release in 2009, such as Monster Hunter 3 and Final Fantasy XIII – leading us to expect the console software market to fuel the entire gaming market.
