Sony is looking to cut the price of the PlayStation Vita – but not until 2013.
The high-powered handheld still retails for on or around the RRPs for which it debuted – that’s between 200-220 for the Wi-Fi model and 250-270 for the 3G machine.
It looks unlikely, however, that Sony is going to move to alter these prices before Christmas is well out of the way.
We always aim to establish price cuts,” Sony’s UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer. So the question is not so much if, but when. We won’t have an across the board price down this Christmas. But what you will see us doing is work very hard with our retail partners to add value to the product to make it more compelling.
Even this week there are some tremendously attractive bundles out there, for example Wi-Fi Vita plus LittleBigPlanet at the 200 price point. We will be working that very hard over the coming weeks as more and more software arrives.”
Gara than added to CVG that a hardware bundle including both PS3 and Vita hardware is not out of the question.
"We’d have nothing against that whatsoever," he added. "And it’s not out of the question that we would do that this Christmas if we wanted to.
"We put together packages for retail, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t create a ‘Vita plus PS3’ bundle, which could feature games that use cross-play, as well as include a PlayStation Plus subscription that both devices could use.
"There is really a story there of the two consoles building a partnership. ‘Better together’, as I say. If we want to continue to promote the partnership between PS3 and Vita, we have to look at ways in which we can show that.”
