A free fighting game using augmented reality developed for the AR.Drone

The rules of the game

AR.FlyingAce is a game of air combat in augmented reality. It takes place between two AR.Drone armed with Plasma missiles. The game’s objective is to virtually shoot down the opposition AR.Drone.

Each AR.Drone has an unlimited number of missiles.

Once the AR.Drone enemy has been detected by the camera, a red cross-shaped timekeeper appears on the screen and the iPhone® / iPod touch® / iPad™ begins vibrating. The driver then has to shake his iDevice to activate the sending of a missile towards the other fighter. The missile trajectory will be visible in augmented reality on the screen of the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad until its impact on the enemy AR.Drone.

Life bars of both AR.Drone are displayed on the sides of pilot screens, the bar on the right corresponding to the opponent. If the level ends before either player has lost his virtual life, the winner will be the one with the highest life bar.

A technological first

Once the Bluetooth of the iDevice is on, each player has to connect his AR.Drone in WiFi and launch the AR.FlyingAce application.

One player selects the“create” option on the main menu and indicates his opponent’s colour and hull type (indoor or outdoor). The second player selects the“join” option in the main menu and also indicates the characteristics of his opponent. The game can then begin. Each player’s respective iPhone/iPod touch/iPad screen displays what the AR.Drone is‘seeing’. Each action - a shot received or launched - will also be displayed on the screen via the ingenuity of Augmented Reality.

Note : If the game is played with indoor hulls, players should place the coloured stickers (sold with the AR.Drone) on it.

AR.FlyingAce is an exciting air combat game which tests the players piloting capabilities whilst taking advantage of the exceptional technical and flying capabilities of the AR.Drone.
