Average Gamer Spent Over £300 on Videogames Last Year

London 19 th June, 2012 – Last year, gamers across the UK bought over 16 games, spending an average of £334 according to a  survey released today. The survey provides important new insights into how gamers are continuing to purchase games, despite the current economic climate and console cycle, including how the past 2 years have seen a dramatic shift from console gaming to mobile devices and smart TVs.

The Survey, conducted between 15 th  and 17 th June 2012 by ShopTo.net, found that new devices were stealing market share from the ‘traditional’ gaming market such as PlayStation and Xbox with 35% of those surveyed spending more time playing games on their Smart Phone.

“Gamers are changing their gaming device of choice with more getting their casual gaming fix from Android and iOS devices,” said Igor Cipolletta, Founder and CEO of ShopTo. “Interestingly, we are seeing game sales on the Nintendo consoles losing out as the casual games market on portable devices continues to grow.”

Around 65% of those surveyed owned a Nintendo Wii but only 4% of those had purchased a game for the console in the past twelve months. The average UK gamer owned 4 gaming devices with over 80% of respondents owning a PC, smart phone and 2 games consoles.

“The fact is consumers have more gaming devices than ever before, with thousands of games being published every week and this, coupled with the lack of new hardware from Sony or Microsoft, is seeing consumers move to mobile devices as their platform of choice.”

“We believe this trend will reverse when the next generation of consoles are released beginning with the Wii U this Christmas.” concluded Igor.
