Melbourne, August 1, 2012 — Cash prizes, hot competition, give-aways, game industry insiders and more than 40 games to play will be on offer at the Ballarat Mining Exchange on Saturday August 4th as a part of the Ballarat Get into Games expo. Entry is free.
The AFL Live Championship and Fragfest competitions both offer a $500 first prize, while runners up will take home kit including new video games, footballs, posters and other gaming memorabilia.
Fragfest will test gamers in one-on-one deathmatches across a trio of shooters: Call of Duty Black Ops, Ghost Recon Future Soldier and Battlefield 3. Entry is free and you'll have between 10am and 1pm to rack up decent results across the three titles in a bid to make the 2pm finals. Meanwhile, the AFL Live competition will see one player climb to the top of the pile with his or her team of choice.
If virtual racing is more your thing, Harvey Norman will have two driving set-ups in place — each wedging you between three monitors — while Big Picture will have its big screen racing rig ready to go, and both crews will be running competitions throughout the day.
There will also be the 40 or so Xboxes on the floor for casual play, as well as plenty of give-aways to spread the loot around.
Ballarat GiG is an annual event designed to highlight the viable and fun careers available in the technology industry using the glitz and glamour of the latest video games. Game Developers' Association of Australia CEO Antony Reed will give attendees the inside word on the games industry, educators will be on hand from the University of Ballarat to talk about avenues into game development and a National Broadband Network Q&A session by Telstra Country Wide will look at the growing potential of digital careers in regional areas.
Ballarat GiG is hosted and organised by Addictive Agency in conjunction with Ballarat ICT for the Ballarat City Council as a part of National ICT Careers Week and Ballarat Business month.
