LOS ANGELES - June 30, 2011– A strange creature starts off as merely a small, gray sphere... just an idea in virtual 3D space. Within just a few hours, this idea morphs into the bust of a bio-mechanical alien, wrapped in metallic armor and baring a terrifying maw framed by four menacing mandibles.
Dreamed up by the talented mind of Vitaly Bulgarov, cinematic artist at Blizzard Animation, this creature is the star and subject of the latest release from The Gnomon Workshop, 3D Design for Production . In this detailed instructional video, Bulgarov reveals the surfacing secrets and high-precision modeling tricks that give his work a photo-realistic appearance.
Produced by The Gnomon Workshop, the leading video series in professional training for artists in the entertainment and design industries, 3D Design for Production illuminates Bulgarov’s process in creating a fully rendered 3D design for production-oriented pipelines. From complex surfaces like multi-layered, metal plates to a fully detailed wire mesh, Bulgarov provides exclusive insights into his creative techniques, creating a sci-fi character design from scratch by utilizing industry-standard tools like ZBrush®, KeyShot®, Adobe Photoshop® and XSI®.
“When I came across Vitaly’s work for the first time I was really impressed by his notion of design, shapes and form,” said Fausto De Martini, 3D Art Director at Blizzard Entertainment.“In addition to Vitaly’s mechanical design, which is one of the best that I have ever seen, his creative organic design has an extremely strong style, which makes his work very unique.”
Vitaly Bulgarov is an award-winning 3D artist who currently works at Blizzard Entertainment as a cinematic artist on games like World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Starcraft II, and Diablo III. After starting his career as a freelance artist in Moldova, Bulgarov moved to Moscow to work in major Russian game development studios as a full-time artist while also continuing to freelance for U.S. and European studios. He has won several awards including a CGChoice Award and the 3DTotal Excellence Award, and regularly contributes to online CG artist forums.
