15.00 MON 11 JUNE
Today, Monday 11 June 2012, Channel 4 is delighted to announce a new award for the video game competition, Dare to be Digital 2012.
Launching today, Dare to be Digital is an annual competition for budding games developers run by the University of Abertay Dundee, which this year has seen entries from 70 universities in 13 countries spanning the globe. As part of the competition Channel 4 is donating a £25K award together with mentoring support for a single team selected by a panel of judges based on potential and ability to work together.
“Dare to be Digital is an increasingly important event in the annual gaming calendar,” says Colin Macdonald, Games Commissioner, Channel 4. “I have been involved in mentoring and judging Dare to be Digital since its early years, and never cease to be amazed by the quality of games produced in such a short space of time.”
“Our contribution to Dare 2012 represents part of Channel 4’s commitment to uncovering and developing great talent in the UK’s games industry and this prize is a great opportunity for Channel 4 to work with the next-generation of UK games developers, and I look forward to getting to play some absolutely fantastic games.”
Dare to be Digital runs from Monday June 11 2012 for nine weeks across the summer, with Dare ProtoPlay computer games festival open to the public from Friday August 10 to Sunday August 12 in Dundee’s Caird Hall. Three winning teams will be announced at the public event, who will automatically become the sole nominees for the BAFTA 'Ones to Watch' Award, a category created specifically for this project.
