Cubic Motion, the human and character facial animation specialist, today announced an offer of 90-second animation tests free-of-charge. This aim of the offer is to allow developers to assess the performance of Cubic’s Accelerated Keyframe (AKF) service. The new pipeline requires only an audio file as input, yet produces extremely high quality animation in large volumes. The animated data is produced on the original channels of the client’s rig, remains fully editable, and requires no adjustments to their pipeline. Running a test up to 90 seconds requires only an existing character asset and an audio file.
This offer aims to overcome the industry perception that high-volume animation from audio is only capable of producing low quality results.
Mike Jones, Director of Production explained: “There’s a common misconception that for high quality facial animation you have to use either performance capture or else traditional key-framing. Key-framing is notoriously slow, whereas performance capture can work well, and is a service we provide to many clients. However, facial capture is a technical undertaking which, apart from time and cost, can compromise other areas of the developer’s budget and timescales. A lot of developers out there capture great ADR audio and would love to send that out for conversion to world-class animation without the overhead of video capture or mocap. To produce animation in large volumes on ultra-rapid schedules, studios often resort to automated lip-sync tools which are not designed to produce the type of AAA quality our clients expect, and so‘audio-based animation’ has developed a reputation as a low-end choice. Cubic’s AKF solution is a very significant breakthrough and changes all this. Providing the character rig is of sufficient quality the animation will be high integrity, high volume, and highly affordable. Moreover, it’s not unusual for us to wrap an entire high quality production in just a few weeks. However, there’s sometimes a concern that working with a third-party could involve major pipeline decisions. This isn’t the case with Cubic, so we’re saying to developers:‘look, it’s simple, send an asset and an audio file and see what you get back’.
