Failbetter Games greenlights Fallen London prequel

It’s the 13th century, and the Mongol Empire covers half the world. Its capital is the city of Karakorum, at the heart of which stands the silver tree fountain - the envy of nations. But the conflict between the Khan, his ambitious daughter and a patriotic spy threatens to tear the city apart...

Failbetter Games has started work on a standalone prequel to its award-winning browser game Fallen London.

The new game, Tales of Fallen London: The Silver Tree was launched last week on Kickstarter and smashed through its funding target of $10,000 in less than eight hours. It’s now at more than 200 percent and still climbing.

“We’ve been blown away by the generosity of our players and fans,” says Failbetter CEO Alexis Kennedy. “The fact that a text adventure made by a tiny indie company can pull in twenty grand in a couple of days feels like an incredible validation. It means people like the stuff that we like - compelling stories and big choices.”

As an emissary to the Great Khan’s court, you will navigate a web of intrigue, love and betrayal. Choose your cause. Fight for what you believe. Spy. Investigate. Negotiate. Lie. Decide the fate of a city.

Like its predecessor, Tales of Fallen London: The Silver Tree is a text-based RPG that you can play in your web browser. It will be built in StoryNexus, Failbetter’s brand new, soon-to-be open platform for creating story-based games.

Notes for Editors

Who are Failbetter Games?

Alexis Kennedy and Paul Arendt formed Failbetter Games in 2009 to create story-driven social games and explore interactive digital storytelling. Their first game, Echo Bazaar (now Fallen London) was  named Browser Game of the Year by the Escapist. More recently, Failbetter created The Night Circus, a highly acclaimed online narrative based on the bestselling novel, for Random House publishing. They have also carried out narrative consultancy work for BioWare.

What is The Silver Tree?

The Silver Tree is a standalone prequel to the acclaimed browser role-playing game Fallen London. What is StoryNexus?

StoryNexus is a brand new games-creation platform based on the tools and expertise used to create Fallen London and The Night Circus. Failbetter’s unique Storylet & Quality approach allows users to easily create their own complex interactive storygames. StoryNexus is currently in closed beta.
