GameCityNights Season 3 Launch Party

Nottingham, 17/01/12 – GameCity, the world’s best loved videogame festival, will celebrate the official launch of a number of new services as part of Season 3 of GameCityNights, the monthly after dark exploration into videogames culture. A new year brings a new series of GameCity events, and what better way to start things than at the very beginning – with the launch party for Season 3 of GameCityNights on January 26th, from 6pm till late, at Antenna, NG1 1EQ.

Celebrating the new season, GameToilet creator Jerry Carpenter will headline the night as the audience share in and play some of his best creations, as well as compete to make their own unique game. Brandon Boyer joins the festivities as our ‘From the Desk of’ to discuss life as an IGF judge, the upcoming Venus Patrol and more, and Owain Davies debuts his new monthly segment as the official House Band to work his musical magic as he wows the crowds.

As part of the event, GameCity Director and founder Iain Simons will unveil several new additions to the GameCity network and guide attendees through their launch.

GameCityTV – Finally it’s here – more than just an archival video platform of footage from GameCity’s prestigious history (including talks, performative events, zombie gatherings and world record attempts) it’s also an online service promoting interaction with other projects and initiatives, including the National Videogame Archive, ITAG conference and more. GameCityTV will be releasing new material weekly, offering a programme of rich archives and all new content.

PlaytheCity – The first official GameCity Wiki will launch as an online, publicly editable repository with an event by event breakdown of everything throughout GameCity’s history. Collecting together official and audience submitted assets, testimonials and more, this will offer people the chance to flesh out GameCity’s history from their unique perspective, as well as track the festival’s adventure over the years.

(Game)CityHall – A new addition to the GameCity network of sites, CityHall is an outlet for the festival organisers to reflect on the top level aims and outcomes of GameCity’s activities, including issues around games as culture, digital inclusion, education, successes and failures and more, including contributions from some of the biggest and best known names in the industry.

GameCity Director Iain Simons said, “GameCityNights, GameCityTV and (Game)CityHall all represent exciting new opportunities for us to prefix other words with ‘GameCity’, which is one of our favourite pastimes. There’s a really exciting slate of new activities rolling out this year, establishing beyond reasonable doubt that GameCity is for life, not just for October.”

Making a welcome return to GameCityNights, season mainstays including the very best indie developers showcasing their work alongside the latest AAA titles, an impassioned MyGame plea, comedian Paul Butler’s Augmented Vision, A Winner is You prize fund, wholesome hot food and a well stocked bar will round out the night.

GameCityNights run on the last Thursday of every month at Antenna in Nottingham, Beck Street, NG1 1EQ. Entry is strictly 18+ only, tickets £5 in advance and for students, £6 on the door for the general public. Due to limited capacity, pre-booking is advised. *GameCityNights is a series of after-dark monthly events that brings together developers, students and players in an exploration of videogame culture. Every month a series of brilliant headline speakers share their insights, passions and experiences in games as they offer a unique look into their work.

GameCity is what a videogame festival should be. 

The Centre for Contemporary Play is a research centre based at Nottingham Trent University which pioneers innovative thinking through new partnerships. Since 2008 it has worked with a variety of leading organisations from the commercial and public sector to deliver major research and inclusion projects. These include the ITAG conference, the GameCity videogame festival, GameCityNights and the National Videogame Archive - a unique collaboration with the National Media Museum.

Driven by leading thinking at NTU, the Centre for Contemporary Play continues to create radical and innovative projects in the academic and public engagement space.

GameCity’s aim is to bring together developers and the public to explore and celebrate videogames and videogames culture, with a particular focus on students. We attract the best speakers in the world, offer up-and-coming artists and developers a platform for their games and create totally unique events.

Some of GameCity’s greatest hits include a world-record breaking zombie gathering, Keita Takahashi designing a children’s playground and Masaya Matsuura, Lorne Lanning, Alexey Pajitnov and Eric Chahi having headlined.
