Games industry hails success of inaugural KAPOW! Comic Con

15/04/11– With 10,000 consumers visiting the IGN Arena at London’s inaugural KAPOW! Comic Con last weekend, the sell-out event has been heralded a success by consumers and industry partners alike.

With KAPOW! celebrating comic books films, games and TV– the IGN Arena was created to bring the UK’s biggest games and entertainment website to life.  Drawing large crowds, the IGN Arena attracted support from games industry A-listers including Codemasters, Disney, Nintendo and Ubisoft and a stellar list of comic, film, games and TV talent, including Thor star Chris Hemsworth, the cast of Merlin and Being Human, Joe Cornish (Adam and Joe), Child of Eden visionary Tetsuya Mizuguchi and the creators of the SAW film franchise, who all took part in series of signings, panels and Q&A sessions on the IGN stage.

Codemasters gave KAPOW! attendees an eagerly awaited first look at some of the biggest releases of 2011, giving consumers a chance to play DiRT3 in a rally themed pit compound and to compete live on stage for prizes. Operation Flashpoint: Red River provided visitors with an enthralling co-op multiplayer experience deep within a sentry-guarded bunker– with visitors competing to win exclusive merchandise. In the IGN Arcade visitors queued for hands-on time with a host of titles including the highly anticipated Portal 2.

Like IGN’s attendance on the show floor, IGN’s online KAPOW! content became a  focal point for games and entertainment fans around the world, with millions of readers flocking to IGN for exclusive news and video coverage of the event whilst media including BBC Radio 1,  Empire, MTV, NBC and Total Film all reported on news originating from the IGN Arena.

Rich Eddy, Director of Communications, Codemasters, said:

“Promoting games in front of a mainstream consumer audience is extremely valuable, and displaying our titles alongside film and comic activity in the IGN Arena at KAPOW was a great opportunity. Throughout the weekend thousands of visitors played DiRT3 and Operation Flashpoint: Red River, with IGN's DiRT3 challenge becoming a cornerstone of their popular on-stage activity.”

Rich Keen, UK Marketing Director, IGN Entertainment, added:

“Delivering a successful, sold-out event in its first year was a fantastic achievement for all involved with the show, and we were delighted to partner with KAPOW! to create the IGN Arena.  We were thrilled to offer the opportunity for publishers to position their products alongside film, comics and TV in front of thousands of consumers at the show and millions of readers on IGN.

“We’re already in discussion with organisers and publishers about KAPOW! 2012 and have plans to make the IGN Arena even more exciting and impactful.”
