Shadow of the Game is an multiple award winning experimental 2D adventure game for PC that focuses on storytelling. The game takes on modern MMO culture, with a humoristic view on the game development industry. In Shadow of the Game, gameplay is all about uncovering the story. The game has many interactive cut scenes and the story unfolds as players talk with characters, solve absurd puzzles and make interesting choices along the way. The narrative is laced with puns and humor, most of which is of an adult nature. Instead of traditional gameplay features, Shadow of the Game is narrative based. The story has many layers; the Shadow of the Game is a game within a game which casts shadows into real life for the characters in the game.
None other than Sid Meier, a wise and experienced game designer, once said: “Gameplay is a series of interesting choices”. That is exactly what Shadow of the Game is. Traditional combat modes and character development systems have been replaced with narrative choices and story-contextual puzzles. The narrative choices determine the story’s development. The player experiences the story through control of varying characters, not just one. If one character fails, dies, or gets politically buried in the Guild, the story continues. When the story requires physical action from a character, it’s the player’s task to solve problems through puzzles. For example, everybody knows that loss of internet connection during a raid could result in disaster. So, what do you do when your father cuts the TP-Cable? You look around to find materials and make an antenna to hack the neighbor’s wireless using a portable radio, of course.
If Shadow of the Game is published on Steam, it will be offered as a standalone game of 10 chapters. The game was originally developed to be released as 10 separate episodes, but DeRail Games has chosen to submit Shadow of the Game to Steam as a standalone game in this case.
Shadow of the Game is DeRail Games’ fifth title, but it is the first one of this magnitude. The game is currently in BETA. It will be ready for release as soon as the green light is given by Steam. Access to the BETA version can be found here: http://shadowofthegame.com/
