How to make a full-featured iPhone/iPad game within two days

Inspired by the successes of the HackDays– the events regularly held in different parts of Russia with the goal of putting developers together and helping them create IT products' prototypes within two days– the members of the Ideal Bureaucracy studio decided to try out the two-day game development approach themselves.

The sprint started on a common day in March, 2011. And 48 hours later a prototype of a new casual game called Papa Penguin was made. Then after less then 5 days of bug testing and polishing a full-featured game designed for both iPhone and iPad was shipped to the App Store for approval.

Papa Penguin is a cute casual arcade game for children and their parents. Your goal is to help devoted Papa Penguin feed his funny little kids by diving in antarctic deeps. Papa's kids are quite gluttonous, so hardly Papa fetches them some fish, they instantly absorb it and demand more and more!

“I once happened to see an article on Habrahabr, a major Russian collaborative blog, about an event that promised to help create a game within 2 days”,– says Anton Grigoryev, Technical Director of Ideal Bureaucracy,–“They offered to register for participation, find a team for yourself (people you need to complete a project), recall all your unsold ideas, take a retreat for two days and make a game. I liked the idea and thought that it would be interesting to try it out inside our team. Although it wasn't easy, I can say that using the Unity 3 development tool by Unity Technologies we’ve managed to accomplish the task and created a full-featured game prototype within 2 days. Moreover it took us less than a week to polish the prototype and get an attractive product that is already available on the App Store. I am sure that with an effective approach it is more than possible to deliver not just a prototype but a small, complete and full-featured game within two days.”

Papa Penguin became the second game by Ideal Bureaucracy that was created in cooperation with the editor of the famous Russian radio station Relax FM– Alexander Ananyev, best known for his Sleepy Town Manufacture and Beautumn IDM projects.
