INDUSTRY VETS TAKE HTML5 GAME DEVELOPMENT INTO THE CLOUD

A group of the games industry’s most technically adept veterans have teamed up to form PlayCanvas, a cloud-hosted platform for HTML5 game creation. It has been designed to solve the complexities of the technology and will ultimately result in some of the most sophisticated web game releases to date.

PlayCanvas was founded by Will Eastcott (formerly Activision’s Technical Director and Criterion’s Product Manager for the RenderWare middleware) and Dave Evans (one of the founding members of the PlayStation Home team). The team have been working on the platform, which is now in closed beta, since early 2011. With over forty years of technical experience throughout the development team, they are very well placed to provide a powerful, end-to-end development and publishing solution for 3D HTML5 games.

In announcing the formation of PlayCanvas, Will Eastcott said “HTML5 technologies are currently generating an incredible amount of excitement in the games industry. The potential is astonishing, but developers are being held back by a lack of quality tools. PlayCanvas addresses this with a comprehensive visual editing environment that makes HTML5 game creation a breeze. But what truly sets PlayCanvas apart is that it's the first fully cloud-hosted game development environment. Developers can access their projects from any device with a browser, collaborate seamlessly in realtime with others, and publish games live to the web with a few mouse clicks. Game development is now more accessible and easier than ever before.”

The innovation and technical soundness of the platform has already been noticed by Google, as PlayCanvas will be present at the Developer Sandbox at the upcoming Google I/O event in San Francisco which takes place 27th-29th June.

Commenting on PlayCanvas’ attendance at the conference, Will added “Google I/O is a massively influential event and only features the most leading edge technical work so we are very proud and encouraged that we made the grade.”

PlayCanvas will launch publicly before the end of 2012. There is some limited space in the closed Beta so developers wanting to try the tools should visit www.playcanvas.com.
