From the March Android report from FADE, Android has seen strong growth so far in 2011, growing from an estimated $2.0 million USD in the 1st quarter of 2010, to $8.8 million USD among paid applications only. Downloads among all paid and free apps have increased at an even higher margin, showing roughly 780% growth from approximately 43 million downloads to 336 million downloads and growing. "With Android on track to sell 150 million handsets this year, the market may reach 1 billion gaming application downloads per month, allowing an unparalleled opportunity for developers." stated Benjamin Schlichter, Director of Research&Analysis at FADE.
Robo Defense Continues Paid Market Domination
Rarely leaving the #1 spot for gross revenues, Lupis Labs Software's tower defense title "Robo Defense" was the #1 title of Q1 2011, posting approximately 186,000 units sold at $2.99 per unit, or $558,000 USD in revenues. However, its position as the top title of Android has been challenged as of late, as titles such as Kariosoft's "Game Dev Story" got within striking distance of the leader, having beaten it in January, and posted sales estimates of 90,000 units sold at approximately $4.52 USD per sale.
For free titles, Rovio's 'Angry Birds' was the clear-cut title to beat, having seen approximately 15 million downloads of the original title and 6 million of 'Angry Birds Seasons' in Q1 2011. Approximately 6% of all downloads during the quarter were either "Angry Birds" or "Angry Birds Seasons".
