Quizball Goal – Arcade Quiz Football developer diary

Once we had signed the contract with our publisher PAN Vision we got down to the business of making Quizball Goal an actual game. One of the biggest risks we saw was getting the gameplay right, this sort of game hadn’t been made before so there was a lot of new ground to break!

There were a lot of challenges we had to overcome. To give an example of what we encountered, here are two questions we asked ourselves when designing the game. How do we find the right ratio of questions versus action? And how do we present the questions and make it interesting for both players, even though just one of them gets to answer? These are issues that are not found in other trivia games but became important due to the new game mechanics of Quizball Goal.

At first, you had to answer a question every time you wanted to do anything, from just running with the ball to shooting to score. We found quite quickly that this wasn’t much fun, the game just felt like any other trivia game with a thin layer of tactical decisions on top of it. After a lot of testing we removed questions for everything but the most critical moments in the match. Only when you tried to shoot, save, tackle and intercept the ball did you get a question. This led to a lot of action on the pitch and also that each question felt important, which is exactly what we were looking for.

Another issue we had with the questions was that unlike other multiplayer trivia games, we had questions which only one of the players got to answer while the other just got to sit back and watch. This wasn’t very fun and after a few different ideas we came up with the Psych Out-mechanics. This means that the opponent can answer the other player’s questions as well, in secret, and if he gets the answer right his fans will start chanting making the timer move a lot faster and psyching out the player who has yet to answer. With this mechanic, every question got interesting for both players and you also got the chance to mess with your opponent’s head which is always fun!

We also managed to make a really fun single player trivia game along the way, which has not been done very successfully in the past, but came quite naturally due to the mechanics of Quizball Goal.
