Theme and line-up Creative Spirit Game Conference

UTRECHT – March 8th, 2012 – The eighth edition of Festival of Games, which will take place on the 19th and 20th April 2012, will focus on the changing landscape of the games industry. Within the theme of “Modern Business Fare” we will discuss not only the latest trends in the world of gaming, but also how these trends influence day to day business.

With the rise of social games and the possibility to play games anywhere and anytime on mobile phones and tablets, the games industry has come to a major turning point. Content and distribution networks are popping up everywhere, competition on these networks is increasing, and protecting intellectual property is getting harder and harder. The presentations and panels of Festival of Games VIII will focus on the skills that are necessary to survive in this changing landscape.

Choose your platform

Thanks to the explosion of platforms it is more important than ever to know which platform offers the best possibilities for your product, and what that choice means for the rest of the development course. Alessandro Bovenzi, European development account manager at SCEE, will discuss how indie developers can make their game successful, both on and outside of the PlayStation Store. Volker Dressel, CMO of InnoGames, will argue that the free-to-play genre is about to take over cross-platform gaming. A more technical perspective on that argument is provided by Alexander Krug, managing director at SOFTGAMES, who will explain why HTML5 offers the best possibilities for developing cross-platform games.

Using your data

While data on app sales is easy to access, the most important insights require that data to be carefully analyzed. Gert Jan Spriensma, data analyst at Distimo, will use Appstore data to explain the do’s and don’ts of publishing Apps. The role of data analysis in marketing indie games to a mass audience or a more specific target audience will be discussed by MoMinis’ VP of marketing, Eyal Rabinovich.

Your game, your IP?

At the end of the day, one of the most important things to all parties involved in creating a game will always be to make money. To do so, it helps if no one publishes a very similar game at the same time. Dr. Leonhard Reis, attorney-at-law at Hausmaninger Kletter and intellectual property specialist, will explain how crucial aspects of a game can be protected as trade secrets to protect game concepts from rampant piracy.

After development

Even when a game is done it still has to make its way to the market, and this often creates unique problems. Alex Dale, CMO of King.com, will discuss the rise of the online social game genre, and looks to new models and ways to maintain stable user groups. Richard van der Giessen will share his experiences with the critical importance of language for a full game experience. As president and founder of U-TRAX he will explain which role localization plays in the development process, as well as how it can make games into a financial success.

More information about the speakers can be found on the Festival of Games website, information on the other speakers will be disclosed shortly.
