Third of PlayStation Console Owners Considering the Vita

New research from a video game price comparison and marketplace website has revealed that a third of PlayStation console owners are considering purchasing the new PlayStation Vita console; following its UK release this week.

The PlayStation Vita is looking to be as popular as its Sony console predecessors, as a new study by a video game price comparison and marketplace site has revealed that just under a third of current PS3 owners are considering buying a PlayStation Vita console.

The study, conducted by, aimed to gauge gamers’ opinions towards the new handheld PlayStation console set for UK release this week; with 1,321 self-confessed gamers taking part, each of whom currently owned a PS3 console.

Those taking part were asked if they were excited about the upcoming launch of the new handheld PlayStation console, to which more than three quarters, 76%, of respondents answered ‘yes’.

The study also revealed that, of those taking part, just under a third, 32%, admitted that they ‘were seriously considering’ buying a PlayStation Vita in the near future. Of these, a fifth, 22%, intended to purchase the handheld console ‘within one week of its UK launch’ this week.

When asked why they intended to purchase the Vita console, the majority, 62%, simply claimed that they ‘wanted a powerful handheld console’. Furthermore, 6% of respondents admitted that they planned to sell their current PlayStation console in order to purchase a PlayStation Vita.

Of the 32% of respondents who intend to purchase a Vita console, half, 51%, previously or currently owned a PSP console.

Simon Kilby, Founder of, commented on the findings:

“Sony’s promotional machine has gone into overdrive with the launch this week of the new Vita console, and it seems that it’s certainly drummed up excitement amongst UK gamers. We really wanted to look into how current PlayStation owners felt about the new launch and if they intended to buy, and to see that as many as a third of current PlayStation owners intend to purchase a console pays testament to the buzz the launch has created amongst the gaming community.”

He continued:

“Whilst the PSP console was a good console, gaming has moved on leaps and bounds since then. Developers seemed to give up on the PSP a couple of years ago, so hopefully, the excitement around the Vita will continue beyond the launch. Personally, I’m most excited about the console’s capabilities – screenshots look absolutely incredible and specs certainly read very well.”
