Videogames are art: the debate ends at GameCityNights

Nottingham, 24/6/11– GameCity, the world’s best loved videogames festival, today announced the details of the next GameCityNights, the monthly, late night exploration into videogames culture. Season 2 Episode 6 will be headlined by interactive artist and designer Chris O’Shea and will take place in Antenna on June 30th, from 6-11pm, NG1 1EQ. For ticket details, see below.

Artist and designer Chris O’Shea, best known for his large scale interactive art projects and Kinect hacking, will be bringing his focus on exploring play and engagement to this month’s Nights as he presents his latest work, utilising Microsoft’s motion controller.

Having been commissioned by organisations including BBC, FACT, Design Museum London and British Council Japan, O’Shea’s work has drawn attention from an international audience and attendees will experience the melding of videogames and contemporary interactive art from a unique and intimate perspective.

Creative performance phenomenon Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School will be hosting the first videogame life drawing session this month as they invite fans to put down their game pads and pick up their art pads and enjoy an evening of mixed media drawing sessions.

Combining classic and contemporary, from pencil to tablet drawing, participants will get the chance to sketch some of gaming’s most iconic characters as they’re brought to life by a series of cosplayers, with prizes on offer for winners.

GameCity Director Iain Simons said,“Games are art. You know it, I know it even Roger Ebert knows it - he's just teasing for attention. So, having settled this once and for all I'm looking forward to spending an evening with some brilliant, creative people - and that's just the audience.”

As ever, GameCityNights will also feature the very best indie developers showcasing their work alongside the latest AAA titles, comedian Paul Butler’s Augmented Vision, A Winner Is You prize fund with contributions from Ubisoft, Brady Games and others, an impassioned My Game appearance, hot food and a well-stocked bar to round out the night.

GameCityNights run on the last Thursday of every month at Antenna in Nottingham, Beck Street, NG1 1EQ. Entry is strictly 18+ only, tickets£5 in advance and for students,£6 on the door for the general public. Due to limited capacity, pre-booking is advised.
